Viola's Visit To Spain 2011
On June 29, 2011, Viola spoke at the International Association of Forensic Mental Health
Services' 11th Annual Conference held in Barcelona, Spain. Her workshop was titled
Developmental Linguistics & Other Concepts Influencing
Child Abuse Investigations.
Viola explained the forensic interview is a critical tool for gathering information in child maltreatment cases. �However, the responses children provide when questioned by adults is directly influenced by their language development. Participants were told about the importance of conducting developmentally sensitive interviews, establishing rapport and learning idiosyncratic differences in children's use of language. They also learned how barriers created by cultural differences can interfere with the ability to gain important information, and often lead to misunderstandings and misinformed decision making especially in cases of child sexual abuse. Viola discussed the latest research findings on memory and suggestibility as it relates to understanding child victims and acting as an expert witness in will also be discussed.
Viola had a wonderful time meeting the IAFMHS Board and members as well as colleagues from around the world. �She thanked the 2011 IAFMHS' President Ron Roesch, PhD for his generous invitation to speak and attend the conference. It was her first visit to beautiful Spain and she took every opportunity to tour lovely Barcelona.
